I replaced my student ID today (free of charge) and was told that we are NOT to put holes in the new student ID's as this will deactivate the magnetic strip in the ID. The ID will then no longer work on accessing labs and class rooms. If you do poke a hole in the new ID's you will have to pay $10 to have it replaced.
